A SHOT OF WHISKEY

In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did
a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give
the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known
as a "shot" of whiskey.

to 2 1/2 cents per each and whiskey was about .25 cents per shot. The term shot regarding a measure of liquid is thought to originate in the late 1600s. Another of our old west myths that probably isn't correct.

maybe $1 a day so I doubt he would spend a weeks pay on one box of ammo. Probably just another myth.

were luck to make $20.00 a month. Some larger ones may have paid $30.00. That amount provided room and board (maybe the use of a horse). The cowboy provided everything else. I've read they may have bought rounds by each instead of by the box. That's why most of them didn't own much.
