Thoughts on a 45-70 Handgun barrel

I have an opportunity to get a 14" Encore barrel in 45-70. Looking for misfit's thoughts on this caliber choice? Is something else better in this particular size(Diameter)? Are cast bullets for this better than say a jacketed 300 Gr. bullet in terms of performance and recoil? Your comments in your experience with this is appreciated!

I have a 12 inch TC barrel and have shot it a lot. 300 grain bullet is plenty. Heavy bullets really ramp up recoil. Can't push bullet all that much faster than a very heavy 45 Colt load, but will have less pressure. I have shot lots of cast at 300 to 360 grains and usually use an HP jacket bullet when using jacketed bullets. I enjoy it. Works on deer and hogs for sure. My elbow is limiting the amount of shooting I do with big recoilers now.

I have 2 45-70 barrels. One contender and one Encore. This is one caliber that is better in Encore. The extra weight helps with recoil. You need as much barrel length as is legal. Remember you are burning rifle powder. Speaking of which IMR-3031 and RE-7 worked best in both my guns. If you are deer hunting 300 gr. hp's are fine. If you are going to hunt something big go with Hornady, Woodley. or swift 350gr. RN or flat point. For cast bullets I use Hunters Supply .459 340gr. FP. I tried them without gas checks and got poor results. Work great with gas checks.

There favorite caliber. As Gary, and a few Misfits are familiar with I like the 45-70. Way back when, Gary put together a nice BFR 45-70 for me. Love that gun. Do what your Comfortable with. And what works for you. Pete

inch or so used to speed up my bullet than that big case takes up. A .454 Casul, .429 GNR OR 460 S&W will do it the same. I have no problem with the cartridge because I have Marlins in 45/70 and 444. If it's a deal and it tickles your fancy jump on it I would just for the heck of it.

300 grain bullets work well in the Encore

The twist is a little slower than the Contender barrels. I couldnt get good accuracy with 405 grain bullets. The 300 grain Sierra bullets work very good. Recoil is very noticeable with heavy loads.

Took it to Africa and it did just fine with Hornady 350 FP at ~1600fps. Took 4 animals with it. I can shoot 20 rounds without an issue and one day shot 50. I also had a TC Hunter barrel in it, but Garys brake just works better. Cast lead shoots great and for most hunting the Lyman 33gr HP design does well. You dont need 1700 fps for it to get the job done. The key is getting a scope to last!
