Hello All:

I was wondering how much meat do you get from a feral hog when it is boned out? I know there is a percentage calculator for deer but I believe it would be different when applied to a pig.

I can't seem to get a straight answer off the web so I figure with the experience of others on this site I can get a good idea. Thanks

Meat

Me and friend i hunt with have killed 53 since deer season went out in mid January.
The meat really really depends on the size of the hog. Probably 25 to 35 percent of the live weight. True wild hogs can be really skinny.

I’ve gotten about 40% boned meat on average.

After processing, I got approx. 130lbs. of sausage and bulk pork cuts. The hog was well muscled and lean.

It all depends upon how long the hog has been feral. If it

is a first generation feral it will have more fat on it than a hog that is the 3rd or 4th generation animal. The 3rd or 4th generation feral will be leaner and more muscled than the typical farm piggie. So I think that answer will differ on the animal.

in my experience with any animal around

40% will usually be right. People shoot big Bison thinking they will get 1000 lbs of meat. Back in 1990 on a hunt out in the Henry Mtns of Utah I was asked to come out from Florida to rid a rancher friend of a bunch of Bison that were destroying his John Deere tractors and tearing down his fences. He got 6 tags for animals that destroy property. So I got 5 friends and we flew out to Utah from Florida and went out to the ranch and ended up shooting 6 big Bison. We weren't allowed to bring any meat back but we could bring the hides and horns back to our taxidermy. The hide on my buffalo for a full mount weighed well over 250 lbs.

I asked the rancher how much meat would be on a 1500 lb Bison. He said after skinning and gutting and cutting the feet and such off we would get about 550 lbs. So I guess no matter what the animal is you can figure on about 40%.
