401 GNR loading and crimping...

Had one of the first 401 GNR guns out the door. In fact, had to wait on dies.

One of the problems, or potential problems, is the crimping of the many 10mm bullets out there that have no cannelure.

This morning while pittling around with some 38-40 loading, I grabbed one of my loaded 401 GNR rounds and run it thru my Lee Factory Crimp Die for the 38-40. I wasn't optimistic since the 401 GNR is shorter than the 38-40. But, much to my surprise it crimped the round perfectly.

This die squeezes the case around the bullet instead of rolling the mouth of the case into the cannelure.

I realize there has been success in holding the bullets in place with neck tension. But, I'm not sure how well that would work with cast or coated bullets.

This sure simplifies much for me. My present gun is a 12" Contender, so never a problem. But, I'll surely add a 401 GNR revolver soon.
