Reeder Custom Guns - Looking for some advice from the group...

My wife and I have been setting a little money aside for a surprise family vacation over Christmas break. We would love to escape winter and go someplace warm.

My wife and kids have never seen the coast, I've never seen the Pacific, so we initially were thinking about going to Universal Studios in LA or even down to San Diego. But I honestly have no desire to go to the People's Republik. Considered the gulf coast somewhere or southern Atlantic coast.

Our criteria isn't too much: warm weather (warmer than western Nebraska in December shouldn't be too hard to accomplish), water to dip our tootsies in, and not break the bank.

Any suggestions?

If I went to the Gulf Coast I'd at least go as far west a Pensacola. The water is dingy from the Mississippi farther west. I like to stay in Destin just south of the inlet bridge to the bay. By the jetties, calm water and you can walk past the jetties to the big waves. The sand is like wet talc. Caused from glaciers sanding the quartz bedrock.

Corpus Christi/Padre Island. Check it out you will like it. Although it is a spring break destination.

in Texas, and I understand San Antonio riverwalk is really nice. Much closer drive down I-35 than the west coast. Check out with Mr Jim, thats his domain.

I like it down there. Last time I went was about a month ago, and it was 34° in San Antonio. The guy unloading me was dressed like an Eskimo and I was in a sweatshirt. Poor guy couldn't figure out why I wasn't complaining. I told him that it was -51° at home, I'd take 34°. LOL!

The Texas Ranger Museum is free and worth seeing. I spent a good part of the day there in December. It can get cold but it usually don't last long. The Alamo is there ... you can do a tour of the old Spanish Missions ... lots of history. Plus the Hill Country to the west ain't that far ... Luckenbach .. Fredericksburg with the Pacific War Museum. You will spend all day in that one.

and the traffic is horrible. You can't get in a restaurant, the stores are crowded, the Jamaicans and Haitians are looking for you and out of staters are prime game. I lived there for quite a few years. During the spring and summer it is hot but bearable and the traffic and such are so so. But in the winter, you don't want to go there. And for sure stay away from the tourist spots like Disney in Orlando unless you enjoy standing in line all day and being pushed and shoved and relieved of a lot of your money. Stick with the Gulf coast of Texas.

those who know stay as far away from the migrating hordes as possible, and come April/May, it slows down again. Texas gets my vote, Gulf Coast if the beach is your thing, late May/early June...JMHO.

I wouldn’t be caught dead at Disneyland in December! Universal studios would be a good choice and sea world in San Diego is ok. The zoo and wild animal park is a good choice and usually not crowded or terribly expensive. Lots of beaches between LA and San Diego to check out. Take a 3/4 day deep sea fishing trip pretty cheaply and catch some nice rock fish and a big Ling Cod! Long Beach is nice too. Traffic will be horrible and not for the faint of heart! I am leaving this place though and won’t look back!

There's a lot to be said for the gulf coast

I go to San Antonio quite often in the truck.

Orange Beach Alabama is nice too.

I am stuck in California but there are nice things here.
