Sharing a hard lesson-learned for Doug, et al

When I went on safari in 2010, I took my scoped GNR Ultimate 44 stuffed with Garrett's. I shot a black mamba out of an Acacia bush with it but that's it. I wanted to use it to finish up a Waterbuck I wounded with my trusty .338 WinMag. After 3 days of tracking that animal, my tracker pushed the critter right up near the bloody Land Rover where I was waiting. It popped up 25ft away just off to the side of the car giving me a perfect frontal chest shot. I pulled the .44 and settled the scope and saw nothing but brown fur. The scope was a 4x fixed. While I was fugging with the sight picture the damn thing ran off. So, lesson-learned is this. At very close range, line up the top scope turret cap with the point of desired impact using the turret cap as a front sight blade. Have Doug practice that technique just in case the quarry jumps up next to him too close for practical scope use. If RSA allowed handguns without scopes I surely would have taken one along as a backup to the scoped handgun and rifle. I finally dropped the Waterbuck on the fourth day of tracking right at last light with the .338.
