A positive post.....
In two weeks the Nissan Rogue will be pointed south and headed to the Sunshine State.
Yup. I and four other good friends are headed to Florida for a wild boar-feral hog hunt. Earlier this year a group of us at the club were discussing a group hunt of sorts. The president of the rod and gun club has always wanted to go on a different hunt.
Here in much of Southern New England when you say you are going on a hunting trip the image of Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire comes to mind. Granted it is fun but your chances are kinda slim. The success rate is 10 percent at best. So after a number of years of sitting in the same tree overlooking the same glacial erratics deposited 13,700 years ago as the Laurentian Ice Sheild receded during the last Pleistocene Epoch you get a tad bored.
So the plan is that we're headed to Florida to hunt feral hog. Something a tad different for the boys
Chris, our beloved president, will be using a 35 Whelen. He bought the gun for general big game and wants to take something with it as a maiden voyage.
Evan, a good friend and board member is planning to take a brand new Savage in 6.5 Creedmore. He sighted it in last weekend and did some practice. I know some have opinions on the round but he is happy and that to me is all that matters.
Gordon plans to take his trusty Winchester 30-30 lever action rifle. He was going to take an old break open 40-65 single shot but ran into some issues with ammunition. So 30-30 it is.
Jason is a young man who loves hunting and is taking something. I believe it is a bolt action 308 but I am not sure .
Being the true handgun hunter I am taking Dad's M29 that Gary worked over as a back up. I took the scope off and it will ride in a nice leather cross draw holster. The main gun will be what Dad called my " lucky gun". Yup. My Super 16 45-70 Contender. Gary worked the barrel, engraved a moose on it and then ported it. The gun is sighted in with a nice Burris 2x scope for which should work out well for the Florida biome. I discovered that the Super 16 likes 300 grain hollow points but does not like the Hornady 325 grain Leveroutio ammo. The groups at 100 yards more than double for some reason. Well. That is to me a 100-125 yard gun anyways.
They are flying down. My plan is to leave a bit early and I will be the gun and " meat wagon , so to speak. I do not mind driving from New England to the East Coast of Florida. We will stay at a small cabin and have a really enjoyable " guys trip" to the Sunshine State.
I may take a 60 year old travelers bottle of Old Crow whisky as an homage to a gathering of good friends and to long lost family and friends.
