Reeder Custom Guns - 358 Contender

Been researching what caliber to use for Indiana deer. I got a contender at a great price but it has a 222 Remington barrel (not legal). The 350 Legend is coming out but I have been reloading for 40 years and have 445 Super Mag brass and only one firearm chambered in it. So now I would like all the information you fine people can give me on it. Brass , dies and of course ballistics. I normally use a heavy slow combination heavy bullet and low velocity. I read a lot and post very little

It is more than the old .35-30 based upon the .30-30 necked up to .358". This was popular for guys with .32 Winchester Special M1894's that had shot out bores. a re-bore to .35 got them a .35/.30-30. Gary's advancement on the idea surpasses even an Ackley version. He straightened the sides and maxed out the capacity, a sharp crisp neck helps keeping the brass from stretching.

You just run a .30-30 through a FL sizer, shoot a 80% power form load and you have custom brass. It should easily outperform the .35 Remington and work superior with a strong neck to headspace from.

If you NEED a straight walled cartridge to comply with unique handgun hunting rules he also has the .400 GNR that is a .30-30 blown out straight to 10mm or .401 cal. Sort of a shorter, smaller version of the .405 Win. which is .411 cal.

Both of those cartridges are on my radar.

My personal one is 14" long. Power is above the old 357 Herrett and crowds a heavy loaded 35 Remington.

Loading is quite easy and straight forward. I lube brass with Imperial Sizing Wax and with one pass thru the die you're ready to load.

Looked at this but more case is more powder. Where do you get the dies for necking the 445 case?

A simpler way to fireform, if just use 30-30 factory loads. I fireformed 60 and did not lose a case. All were perfectly blown out. If you are aiming at something you will be luck to hit it.

358 Contender

Gary came out with a unique .35 a couple yrs. ago.

Believe he wants to stay with the 445 cases

The 358 GNR is an excellent Contender round...
