Savage 99 case hardened

Larry‘s comment below about his savage 99 from Colleen has me making time to comment on the color case hardened Savage that I got from the Saturday sale a few weeks back.

My local gun shop does a fair amount of gunsmith work, machining, bluing and apparently dabbles in color case hardening. When I arrived to pick up my Savage 99 takedown the shop was all abuzz over this rifle. The shop owner was amazed that he couldn’t find any hint of where the original caliber was on the barrel. He could not say enough about the quality of the case hardening stating that “nobody does case hardening like that, that is impressive”. Others were impressed with the overall restoration and pointability of the gun which brings me to the gun model.

After a bit of research I found it to be a Savage 1899H TD. It is a featherweight model, takedown made in 1915. It has the appropriate perch belly hollowed out stock with matching serial numbers on the forearm and receiver but not on the stock.

Amazing quality throughout in a model which I was not expecting.
