How does the 338 gnr compare to a 338 win mag in a rifle . I read on the gnr wild cat page around 2400 ,is that in a 15 inch barre? I would love to have a encore set up some time soon.

in a 15" barrel a 180 grain will do almost 2700 fps.

a 200 grain will do well over 2600 fps and a 225 will do about 2550 fps. That is in a 15" Encore. Drop a couple of grains and it will do about 160 fps less in a Contender.

the 338 GNR prior to that. On that hunt I used 3 or 4 new cartridges, the 338 GNR, 224 GNR, 356 GNR and the old favorite 41 GNR in a S&W revolver.I wanted to see if the 338 had the punch for hard to drop African animals like Gemsbok, Blue Wildebeest, and the top 2 record book Common Reedbuck. It performed perfectly taking those animals plus a baboon. The 41 GNR took Red Hartebeest, Blesbok, and a Jackal and the 224 GNR took an Impala. I had used my 378 GNR on 2 or 3 previous safaris but I brought it along too (back then there was no limit on how many guns you brought) taking an Nyala and another Impala. It was a great hunt plus all the cartridges performed perfectly.

all those 338 GNR, 224 GNR, 378 GNR were Contenders

and today's Encore loads are considerably more punch than the original Contender loads. Plus the 41 GNR was a custom S&W 657 and the single action loads today are a bit more punch there too.
