Reeder Custom Guns - Natural Selection of Cartridges...

Been several good cartridge threads on here over the last few months. It got me to thinking about just Lever Action Guns.

I wonder how many cartridges have been introduced or modified to dethrone such greats as the old 30-30 WCF, 35 Rem and 45-70 Gov't. I can remember the 7x30 Waters, 307 Win, 308 Marlin, 356 Win, 375 Win, 444 Marlin and 450 Marlin. There was also a 338 made by Marlin for a while.

Most have come and gone while the old reliable, time proven work horses continue to survive. Marlin has announced the return of the 444 Marlin.

I believe you could write a book on just the Wildcats the old 30-30 has produced. I do realize the 30-30 itself was created by necking down the 38-55 WCF.

Some things just seem like they're here to stay with good reason...

I'm a fan of the Contender and they are perfect for that frame.

Very determined to try more of those in Contender Carbines too.

The 338 Falcon is calling my name in a 14" and 23".

all these new ones finished and the loading data done. I don't like to put Sean in a position of having to Afro engineer brass to do the data and would rather wait until we get the dies in to send him a barrel and the dies. The problem there is Hornady is behind on our dies and we need to finalize the data we have and get it to the printer to have the 3rd edition of my reloading manual done. So we can't do one without the other and the other is running way behind.

I can't shoot a high powered rifle, because of a bad shoulder. That does not meet I can't follow rifle technology. I really like lever action rifles. One of the first deer I killed was with a Savage 99 in 300 Savage. Marlin 338 is one of the few true Elk rifles in a lever action. I own 13 GNR wildcats. Three of my favorites are based on 30-30. 7 GNR fireform with 7X 30 Waters, 30 GNR fireform with 30-30, 355 GNR fireform with 30-30. I like to keep it simple.

Like anyone cares anyway, but the 400 GNR is a very logical and Levergun cartridge.

In some ways a miniature, 45-70.

As a dual fuel cartridge, smokeless from the factory but could be reloaded with more popular and readily available black powder? Maybe that's what dug out its foothold in history. Sounds good anyway! LOL!

That it was reloaded with Black Powder and it fouled terribly. Also, that's the pedigree of the 32 Special. Supposedly, it handled Black Powder better.

The 30-30 WCF was the first smokeless powder sporting cartridge as far as I can tell. The event of stronger steel barrels made this possible. The 30-40 Krag preceded the 30-30 with smokeless powder, but was a military cartridge.

All of this from memory and not written in stone. But, I believe it's correct...

I'm getting great ballistics. High velocity, low spreads and superb accuracy.

In my Ruger #1 30-30 WCF I can get within 80 fps of the original 300 Savage ballistics. With the extremely high B.C. of the Hornady SST Bullets, 100+ yard Energy is just as high.

Great for the mild mannered cartridge...

I can't seem to keep a 30/30 though. I always buy a neglected one for a hundred bucks and fix it up and someone offers me cash for it I cannot refuse. I have my eye on an 336DL With a 24" barrel. I'm personally fond of the 35 Remington.

Of all time hype. That being said I fell head over ass for both the romance of Africa and the American west and frontier. It was 4 bore, and Nitro Express rounds, the Sharps black powder rounds, the 38-40, 44-40, 45colt. As I grew up this hasn’t changed but it is the “calipers “ I have a love affair with not so much the cartridge. I have more .25’s than any other 9.3’ next but I have hunted with and killed more game with .41 and .45 than all others combined. The really remarkable thing about Gary is he has Never promoted any single cartridge as the wiz bang do all. All his cartridges are centered around more options for the handguner. We live in the hay day of ammunition! I have become a convert to the G2 platform. For me Gary’s Falcon’s are about the best balance of powder capacity you could want in the G2. Now just pick a favorite caliber and off you go thanks to Gary. And I truly mean that, Thank You Gary For What You Do. The 361Falcon is looking like the perfect round in the G2 for me. First time ever the bullet I wanted to use in a cartridge was the one the gun liked the best, and is perfectly designed for its velocity. After 58 years. I Got one right the first time LOL.

"most powerful", "flattest shooting" and all that crap. That means nothing if the gun won't shoot straight or the guy behind the trigger can't shoot a decent group. It is all hype and fluff to sell the product and unfortunately the young shooters are falling for it.
