purty bullets

Lyman #457191 ... the old Winchester .45-90 rifle bullet. One of my favorites in the .45 Colt. Back in the 1970's I communicated with Elmer Keith about his work using this bullet in the Colt Single Action .45. I had recently been given a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Colt and I figured it was much stronger than the Colt. I began experimenting with loads of 2400 and eventually settled on a load that I shot in the gun for years.

I was with John Taffin and Bob Baker and a bunch of the Shootists on the Greys River in the early 1980's. We were shooting at an old log cabin about 1/3 of a mile away. When we inspected the cabin we found that most everything we shot at it went through the front wall of logs. Some loads went on out the back wall. My load with this bullet was a bit over 1100 fps yet it still penetrated the front wall and had enough power to dent a metal bedframe that was in the room.

After posting some pictures of my old .45 Ruger I decided to take it to the range. I have not done much with it since about 2005 or 2006. It needs some range time. So I am casting bullets!
