A 45-90 is more powerful than 405 Winchester. The ammunition would be critical.
1886 in 50/110 would be my choice.

Rounds that can also penetrate adequately. Bullet technology was real iffy back then. High velocity made them break up. Paper patched bullets were top drawer for speed and penetration. Paper jackets!
Im with Woody with an 1886 , except i 45-90 , and a shotgun.

Marco has one when we where kids. We where out shooting one day
On some lot somewhere that all the locals shot. In those days you could shoot almost anywhere. Someone dumped an old gas furnace out. It had cast iron core. You could shoot about half way through the rows or the core with a 30-06 with 180gr soft points. The .58 cal would go clean through and in to the pile behind it!
It's hanging over the fireplace! Damn, those were the days!

A top quality double would have done fine, a top side lock please! The Lever guns would do and the .405 is a great ctg., the 1905 Win. looks like it's coming apart when it's levered, to me. I know it was popular but I've not messed with it enough to feel comfortable. The 1886 didn't have any bullets that really impressed me in that vintage, they were still all running around 1500 fps.
You threw the gauntlet at 1899 so I want the genie to poof me a top quality double .450 Cordite rifle. Other than that about anything will do and did, maybe a handy .303 10-shot.

In the Sheds museum. They looked very small, maneless females but I read they were first made into rug mounts. That must have lost some hide to work with. I truly dig that .303 sporter in the movie.
It does not take a large animal to be dangerous.

I have seen what a 150 pound Black Bear can do and it is amazing.
A leopard can carry an impala up a tree with ease. And those were heavy cars. :)
