For a weapon to be used in combat, I’m not impressed. I’d much prefer a good .45 revolver of some flavor if not the superior 1911. The old 1911 .45, it’s flat the tits when you can compare them side by side and shoot both. The Luger certainly is a wonderment and mechanical marvel. The safety was broken and luckily an “un-numbered” part on this early example. It’s the 11th made in the third run for the German military, dates to 1909. I found an in- numbered safety bar in Ohio for $20. Two YouTube videos later I confidently punched out the pin and replaced it. Since it was scattered apart like a Chinese puzzle I Q-tipped and lightly lubed it with some magic 21st century slick juice. Not a total cleaning but I was first in after a very long time. It sure is fun and Luger guys all seem pretty nice and helpful. Thanks again!

9 years while on active duty. I was and still am a devotee but have transitioned to the 9mm. New loads are very effective and even on a 1911 platform you get higher capacity. I find I can get faster and more accurate follow up shots with 9mm. Depending on where I am going and how I have to dress I alternate between my Star BM, and XDS for carry. Gonna go for a Glock 48 soon. I also have the RIA 1911 in 9mm/22TCM and Glock 19 that I keep handy at home or in my vehicle.

even with the very best JHP expansion was iffy. Modern designs changed all that. I think the modern 9 is at least as good as the old .357 of yore, almost. The two S&W domestic offerings were OK. I really liked the M639 and the M59 was just too fat. The Cold Commander 9 was nice but pretty rare.

I have also gravitated to the 9 for some carry. I love the Glock 43X and 48 too. The M19 is a favorite. Good soulless tools. These days I'm driven by light weight, compactness, and fewer buttons.

The Luger just could not be too good in the mud and grit. It's fit together like a Rolex and while it field strips relatively easy it's the other parts that break. I also found that you do not typically keep a wooden bottom mag loaded or risk it exploding into splinters! I'll have to get a shooter mag from Mec-gar.

Colt Commander. I had a sweet 639 once, wood grips, shielded adj. sights. But I couldn’t hit my butt with both hands with it. Typically 4-6” groups at 25 yds. Later the sweet 3919 (?) was really nice, small, and shot just as well.

My father in law has an old 70’s Steyr GB that holds a whole bunch of ammo and is huge. It was really cool and exotic back in the day though.
