Separate it from the 45 Government aka The 45 Short Colt.

Some will argue with....well, anything.

cartridge. It was dropped years ago. I have customers all the time think 45 Colt means the 45 ACP. A couple of years back Jim Taylor sent me a pic of a 45 short colt and the box it came in but I lost it when my site was hacked and a lot of pictures erased.

under 45 Government. It also gives the difference in the 4 different 45 caliber rounds that were offered by the military and the confusion it caused.

for Colt, and as such, they could have marked their guns however they wanted. They did not mark their guns .45 Long Colt.

Not worth arguing about, just fun. The 38-40 was originally called the 38 WCF, but changed to avoid confusion with the 38-55. We call it the 38-55 Winchester, but it was originally a Ballard cartridge. I believe later Ballard waa taken over by Marlin.

Cartridges of the World is a good starting place. But, I've got hundreds of old gun books and many different stories. Just makes a great hobby better...

Both... The Long Colt Moniker came about to...

either one is correct. There was a short Colt

the cartridge is listed in Cartridges of the World
