This saying is often repeated when discussing the 45 ACP. Bill Allard of the NYPD Stakeout Squad used a Colt National Match 1911 in 45 ACP in many of his shootings and he chose it because he wanted a round that would penetrate to the bad guy's vitals and end the fight more quickly. I don't remember if he used hollowpoint or hardball ammunition but he ended the careers of many violent armed robbers with an adequate round and precise shot placement.
