Boy the .450 helped me bust my elbow...

I was testing it last night off the bench. NEVER rest your elbows on a table or bench with a heavy kicker. That is self regulating. I had a thin pad under my elbows but found instantly it was not near enough. It hurt all night and my shooting was all flinchy after that.

I sourced a very thick pad but it was too late.

My 4895 powder and the 405 gr. JSP bullet is showing about 30 fps per powder grain increases in speed at this particular level. Pressures are fine and I could easily go up. It seems very progressive and no sudden surprises yet. 60 grs. garners 1600 fps and this is my current limit, possibly beyond it. The whack on my bony elbow was 35 ft. lbs. at about 20 fps. For only a 10% increase in fpe and TKO I think a more sedate 1500 fps and 57 grs. charge will do just as well for anything I can predict. If I wanted to go maybe 3-5 grs. more to whatever max capacity is, I think maybe 1750-1850 fps would be topped out. That's correlating to published .458 Winchester ballistics from my 13" rifled barrel length. That's plenty, thank you!

I know well what your talking about... Wound up sliding elbow pads, for football, on my arms that helped tremendously. Still use them when bench shooting...

Nothing like a double whack to the funnie bone.

Much like big rifles, a standing hunters position is best for shooting these big kickers. Off the bench, arms way off the table (about a foot) and almost, but not quite, fully extended is best.

I have shot 400 gr. .416's at a measured 1900 fps but my palm suffered greatly. Heaven forbid getting the off hand knuckle or fingers in the way! That diabolical trigger guard whack. It's too much for me.

WB, get a few Kotex pads from the Mrs....LOL

get some elbow pads like the military uses. They have a hard shell with a pad that is about 1/2 inch thick. I use them all the time and they help a bunch! Especially with these old wrists and elbows! LOL

I keep an old bath towel in the shooting bag

has lots of uses. Padding elbows is one. Padding a rest, catching brass, drying a range table or seat, drying off after running thru the woods naked during a rain shower.......
