Kase and Colleen both shot a lot in combat shooting while we were in Florida and both shot custom 38 Supers that we built for them. They were both double stack gripframes and neither ever had any problems. I think some of the "experts" blame that small rim for them not shooting well. Plus all the hooraw about the rim sticking way out there is BS also. A sheet of notebook paper is .005, so a rim sticking out .007 is nothing, at least nothing to cause problems. I knew at least 2 old Texas Rangers that used nothing but Colt 38 Supers and as far as I know they never had any problems. They are long gone now so it would be hard to ask them. Plus some Law Enforcement agencies in the southwest use the 38 super still today. I am not sure what gun it is chambered in but a lot of the old western law enforcement officers still favor the Colt 1911.
We build quite a few 38 supers on the 1911 frame (not as many as we do 45s and 10mms) and other than having a hard time finding decent magazines we haven't had any problems with them feeding and functioning.
For quite a few years and still today, more combat shooters use the 38 super than any other cartridge as it was and is the only caliber that can reach the power factor required in combat shooting and still keep the recoil down to allow the speed shooting required. There are probably thousands of combat shooters that have and still use the 38 super in all their shooting. I am not supposed to call it combat shooting anymore as that might disturb some folks sensitive feelings. Screw 'em. Anyway, if you are worried about the Super not working, put your mind at ease. it has worked for a hundred years and still works.
