Reeder Custom Guns - I remember this, the .41 GNR G2 pistol

Speaking of "hard" bullets and game performance. These are not full-patch bullets but actually jacketed bullets with a "hard" point rather than a "soft". They sport a reasonable meplat and will shoot through about anything. I have seen them sort of mash into a totally flat nose, after penetrating heavy bone, but never actually expand or lose any weight at all. Most sail on through never to be recovered.

Gary has really amazed me with their performance on game. I've seen him do it several times but I'm not sure I can place the bullet so well. I keep trying, practicing.

has taken probably 2 dozen big critters like that. Usually one shot if I do my part. After seeing the failure of 45 ACP JHP bullets on Colleen's bear I have decided no more JHPs. The 41 caliber silhouette bullet is, as you said, almost a FMJ with a tiny bit of lead exposed at the tip and they act like a FMJ.

The silhouette bullet is perfect for large animals like Bull Elk, Bison or any other large bodied animal. But they aren't worth diddly on small animals like hogs or deer. They punch right thru like an ice pick and they run off wounded. For them stay with a good soft point bullet.

I think Remington was the first to come out with a solid tip hunting bullet. It has a separate brass tip that forced the bullet to expand on impact yet it went deep into the animal.

I think it was 190 gr. JHP, police use only. Boy I felt sinister. MY objective was to shoot it into stuff and see what this explosive stuff would do. Much to my dismay the large hollow cavity mostly filled up with whatever I was shooting and did not expand, only sort of mashed. I was not really impressed with penetration either. I was shooting split oak firewood, poor boy bowling pins. I could split the wood more and recover bullets. My favored bullet back then was the Speer half-jacket in .357 and .44. It seemed to combine penetration and some expansion too.
