I had been out waking in the hills most of the day with my daughter. We had hiked several miles back into the mountains and were just enjoying the country and looking at the game. We stopped for a bite to eat and to rest a bit on a small steep mountain that looked down on a narrow sharp canyon. As we sat there enjoying the food and the view a rather large herd of Mule Deer came over the ridge opposite of us. I wondered why they were moving so fast when several large coyotes loped in view behind them. I had a .454 Casull with me and pulled the gun, getting a good position to shoot. One coyote stopped for a moment, standing sideways about 150 yards out. I put the sights on it and fired. I saw the coyote hump up and then walk off stifflegged into the brush. The other coyote disappeared and the Mule Deer moved on down the canyon. We packed our stuff and went on over to find the coyote that I had shot.
When we got to the area I searched and searched and could not find it. Finally I started over, going back to the original spot and making larger and larger circles. Coming up on a rather large cactus I peered under it and there was the coyote, quite alive but in poor shape. I fired a shot through it's neck and finished it. The flat-nosed Keith slug running about 1600 fps had busted it's stomach open real well on the first shot. It just crawled off into the brush to die.
I tossed the critter over my shoulder and carried it several miles home, intending to skin it when I got there. By the time I got home my head was itching something fierce! I asked my wife to check it out and she said I had little creatures crawling all over my head.
I went and showered using Hartz 3-in-1 Flea and Tick shampoo, twice, and had no more problems. I can recommend it to you. Probably a better idea however would be to skin the coyote in the field and carry the hide home in a plastic sack!
