Maybe you can learn something, I did. Yesterday I posted a picture of my son’s new pride and joy acquisition. I’m happy for him, glad he’s so into it. It’s not as big as it looks, maybe even slimmer than a Glock 17, but about the same overall size as a Glock 34. It’s designed to sweep up in combat as fast and as accurately as possible. I DO have great interest in how the engineers attempted to achieve their goal by design. Obviously their motive was as low a bore axis as possible, literally. Build with as few parts, moving or not, as possible. Ruggedness and a solid platform as possible within the other design possibilities.

I’m also impressed they did not re-invent the wheel but went back in time some 125 years and borrowed from the original Bergmann concept. King Solomon would approve. The most prolific point is a locking block moves only slightly down upon firing (I measured 9/100th of an inch) as the slide assembly slightly moves rearward in initial recoil. This clears the barrel and allows the slide to move fully rear ward with the barrel staying on its original horizontal plane. No rotating or tilting mass.

The latest Glock design uses a partially rotating barrel to attempt the same thing. Also the trigger bar system is unlike the stirrup design of the 1911 or side of frame idea so popular, or even the overhead system of the HP. It moves backward inside the frame to rotate a sear release sideways, horizontally. Also note the slide rails on the frame have a total length of some 10” or so. The Glock design uses (4) ½” tabs. Both work but obviously for harsh work the greater surface area affords strength and solidity.

An interesting trivia note; on the movie “Big Jake”. A P38 pistol was modified to look like an early Bergmann semi auto. They pre-date the 1896 Mauser C-96, a 6.5 Bergmann cartridge was initially used. It was likely one of the first commercially successful semi-auto handguns produced. The more common Bergman M1910 was adopted by the Spanish Military and others as produced by Piper-Bayard in Belgium. The later, more potent, and successful, military cartridge was the 9X23mm Bergmann.

The earliest design cartridge did not have an extractor grove, it simply blew out, or fell out unloading a chambered cartridge.

I’m not trying to sell anyone on this rig; I am just studying the design for thrills and knowledge. There was some thinking that went into this design to give the shooter an edge his adversary would not have. It’s a total combat gun. There are some serious designs out there today. I think it profitable to know what stuff is out there, maybe coming ahead someday. Compare the Russian AK-107 (scary efficient design) to our M4 that we hang all sorts of crap off of in a low bidder, seemingly corrupt vendor, allocation system. It is a totally different school of thought and objectives, worth considering, as a student of firearms. I thought you might think it interesting.
