I was saddened by the passing of my landowner friend last summer. I was granted permission to continue to hunt on the land by his son but he said that he is unsure of 2019.

Well it is 2019 and I chatted with him. He is allowing me to continue my tradition to hunt on the family property as I have for over 30 years. Wow. Time went by. I still remember myself as a long haired 19 year old traveling throughout Windham County Connecticut in a Camaro seeking written permission to hunt deer. This man who owned a business and a Vietnam vet was about the only one to sign the slip. One of the nicest men in the world. He and my Dad got along and the two of us hunted deer and turkey in this location for a long time. Great times in the past.

Now I hunt solo and it seems that the best time to get a deer is the first two weeks of the early archery season . So come Sunday September 15th I will be in my Dad's old ladder stand with my crossbow awaiting a shot at some fine meat.

Also I was lucky in that I got my Zone 8 antlerless permit for Massachusetts.

AT A TIME WHEN CHANGE IS SO RAPID

No doubt you was able to keep permission over the years by being a good steward of the land as well as a good neighbor as well. My.family is blessed with a similar situation. But there is more of us now so I look for new opportunities as I can. I am even trying some state land this year!

Happy hunting!

I walked to within 10 yards of a velvet buck

I am hoping this is a good message. I pulled Dad's ladder stand down to conduct maintenance. I want to repaint and redo some of the straps and the like on it. I went to check the other side of the road and as I crossed a small stream I spooked a nice velvet buck. He was about 6-8 points but I was surprised that I got within 10 yards of him.

Needless to say there is a nice paper birch tree just inline with that spot along with plenty of tracks.
