On your 1911 and the full length guide rod has a flat base, than you can pull the slide stop out and the slide and guide rod with all stay in place with the slide and, barrel. So you’re just swapping slide completely assembled. 45 for 22. Not a big difference but kind of cool. The only other reason is if you are shooting a hot rod, a +p+, or cor-bon or super, and want a spring buffer to protect the frame from the pounding. No free lunch, you go in powder there is more and faster wear and tear.
