Many folks poo-poo the .40 S&W in a revolver

but it is a mistake. Factory ammo is exactly the same performance as the .38-40 Win. Loading your own you simply seat to full 10mm OAL and load accordingly, then it is a 10mm full power. You can buy a 5 gal. bucket of .40 S&W brass for what a much smaller sack of 10mm brass runs! It's the same cases, one is just a little shorter.

Now you can do the same to a 10mm revolver, seat long and go up in performance. But the .40 is so cheap to run. My Reeder Single-six .40 ran 155 gr. bullets at 1250 fps no problem, not even a hot load. It's safe as you can't fit them in anything else. (Except a Glock G20)
