Reeder Custom Guns - Opinions Please...

I have a Remington ADL .30-06 and a Browning A-Bolt Stalker .270 with matte finish, composite stock and matte finish Leupold 3x9 scope, the Browning is definitely the nicer of the 2. My question is if I were to eliminate one, which one would be better to keep a .30-06 or .270. About all I really hunt anymore is deer, coyote and maybe an elk hunt is in the future. For heavier game, should the time come, I have a Marlin .45-70. I may keep them both, just haven't made up my mind either way yet. I got into fly fishing a few years ago and hunting has take somewhat of a backseat. Plus when I hunt deer I am actually more of a handgun hunter anyway and I have those calibers pretty well covered with .357. .44 Magnum and a .454 Casull, the Casull being used the least of the group but I won't get rid of any of the handguns.

is to keep those and pick up a good .375 R&H .. a 30-30 (either Marlin or Winchester) a good .22 rimfire bolt action and a semi-auto .. a .357 Levergun .. and a .44 Magnum levergun so the handguns have a complimentary long gun. A good .22 pistol would be a good addition. And you will need a couple good shotguns. I personally like a good pump 12 ga. and a 20 ga. ... but I also like the single shots, so you may want to get 3 or 4. That way if you decide to go fishing in Alaska or Africa or South America, you will already have the proper firearms to take along so you can get some hunting in.

Don't sell. You will regret it later.

above, sell that damn 454 (I really really really hate that cartridge) and buy some of the items Jim mentioned. Did I mention I hate the 454?

abusive cartridges. With the 454 and full power loads getting off a second quick shot is pretty much not happening. It can easily cause a flinch in even the most experienced shooters. The recoil of the 454 is, to me, more abusive than the 475 Linebaugh, 500 Linebaugh or my 510 GNR. They are more of a slow push while the 454 has a vicious whip to it that I just don't like. I shoot a lot of large caliber guns every year and the 454 is just not my cup of tea.

Shooting a 454 will make your elbow hurt as well as your hand. I have 3 and I agree with Gary.

things on here that turned me onto the 455 GNR. The 455 GNR will do everything the 454 will do and at about half the recoil. Thanks mark!

him years ago in the Alaskan Hunter series. He told me at the HHC that he cuts down 454 brass to 45 LC length and loads them up to a hot 45 Long Colt level and they are pleasant and accurate. So I guess that would be one 454 I would like. The 45 Long Colt is such a more flexible round anyway, sort of a do anything round.

270 is backseat to the 30-06. The '06 is by far the most flexible of the two shooting bullets from 125 grain up to 250 grain plus ammo is readily available everywhere. The 270 is a good cartridge but the bullet choice is very small and the bullets are very fragile compared to a 30 caliber bullet.
