but I have one addition to the Ruger Hawkeye African. I now have the rings for it and most of a box of Nosler Trophy Grade 338 Win. Mag ammo, 4 missing. So that is almost $100 in new additions to the gun. Plus I have dropped the price a bit. Here is the rest of the info.It is Ruger's top of the line Hawkeye African in 338 Win Mag. The old fellow that had the 458 magnum had this one too for his African hunt that never happened. The gun has been test fired only. It is the deluxe Hawkeye with the express sights and is set up for scope rings also. And I do have the rings. It also has the removable muzzle brake. This one is a beauty and one of the reasons the Ruger 77 is so sought after by serious hunters. Book value on it is $1275. It is sale priced at $695.

I forgot our motivation but we were loaded for Bear, so to speak. I had a Ruger M77RS Laminate Stainless and he had a special run Weatherby MKV (in .338 Winchester - rare) with a fancy synthetic Kevlar stock and fluted stainless barrel. We had a bunch of tires stacked head high in front of a pin-oak tree about two foot thick. Our target was in front. We shot a bunch of 200 gr. loads at that 125 yd. set up. Come to find the tires were like a pile of leaves, no resistance what so ever. The 200 gr. were fully penetrating the tree, blowing chunks out the back, and we killed the core or heart. About 2 yrs. later the dead tree fell over, it was some 50-60 ft. tall. The Ruger would hold an easy 1" to 1.5" group at that distance and the Weatherby in our hands could not beat it. We did note the Weatherby seemed to beat us up a little more, while the Ruger did not really have any recoil pad at all, just a think rubber butt.

I think the .338 Win. mag is a serious hunting tool. Had they had it back in the glory days of Africa I think it would have been quite popular. It still is a top choice in Alaska with serious hunters and pro guides.

With a 225gr Nosler Partition, running just under 2900fps. Shot a big cow Elk some years back at about 35yrds. Took 2 steps and dropped like a rock. Hit behind front shoulder, and took out offside shoulder. Never found the bullet.

with at the Y-O ran a Hornady 200 gr. at 2600 fps. Doug used his rig just like it too. We both took nice Blackbucks. It may seem overkill and a 7mm GNR would likely do just as well. But the shot was $2500 back then! A clean miss is humiliating but blood drops and no animal was disastrous! You still paid the $2500. But it was standard fare to "hire" the boy with dogs to track the wounded creature. He has a minimum fee and of course if he is successful you are obliged to tip him for it, or you're an asshole. Not hard at all to tie up another $1000 on a wounded and misplaced critter.

SO a .338 GNR and 200 gr. on a 90 lb. Blackbuck was fine in my book! I shot my critter twice!
