hate the .454 Casull, or at least that's the rumor going around :) I have the Ruger Toklat, if I were to put a scope on it would I effectively have a 200 yard gun? So far I haven't found the recoil to be objectionable, but I haven;t shot any super heavy loads in it yet, and probably won't as I don't need to.

not familiar with the Toklat. What is the barrel length?

454 question

From my reading here, it seems like some folks don't like the 454 because of the too snappy recoil. Recoil which is due to compressed load, so I wonder "why not back down the load a bit?" If the load is backed down, does this put the 454 in the same range as a hot 45 Colt? Not trying to cause trouble here, just trying to understand. Is the 454 case a longer 45 Colt case? Thanks amigos.

a heavily compressed load will cause a snappier recoil and

I assume that is the situation with the factory recoil. That was one of the reasons I developed the 455 GNR. It is based on the 475 Linebaugh case so the same powder load that is in the 454 is not compressed in the 455 and will be easier on the shooter. And yes, the 454 is a slightly longer case than the 45 Long Colt.

And before folks get their panties in a wad, we build a lot of custom 454 revolvers. Just because I personally don't like the cartridge doesn't mean a thing. It is just a personal thing with me. If you love the 454 that is great. It is a very good cartridge that a lot of good handgun hunters love. I just don't like it. Nuff said.

Gary why is the recoil from the .454

so much more "violent", for lack of a better word than some of the more powerful cartridges? I'm certainly not a ballistics expert, just trying to learn as I go.

Not Gary, but SAAMI lists max pressures

... of 65,000 for the 454, which is crazy high in the world of handgun cartridges.

one of my gun writer friends, maybe John Taffin,

did an article on a new load for the 454 and he said it ran 72K in pressure. That is high. Not sure it was John, but it was one that I trust and that is a short list.

Toklat is 5" Slab Sided Barrel

to answer your question is put a good 4X scope on it and see if you can keep your shots in 5" at 200 yards. If you can't, then start moving closer to the target in 20 yard increments. When you get to where you can consistently keep all your shops in 3" or less then that is your maximum range. In a machine rest the gun will probably do it at 200 yards easily but you have to work in the human factor.

that is just a vicious rumor going around. I

don't hate the 454, I actually despise it and would rather have a sister in a whorehouse than a 454.

And yet two of my favorite big bores are Reeder 454s...

It's one of my favorites. Both are semi customs, but sure rate high on my list.

I don't shoot factory ammo, so no issues with the cartridge.

I'd love to see a Ruger #1 chambered in it...

My Ultimate 45 includes a cylinder for the 454. I also have a lever action rifle in that caliber. I LOVE them! That being said, I am not using factory ammo.

YOU ACTUALLY SCOPE IT AND SEE WHAT IT AND MOST ASSUREDLY YOU CAN DO. 200 YARDS IS AN AWFUL IFFY SIXGUN SHOT ON LIVE GAME.

I agree with Gary again. The 454 won't do

Anything more tha a 44 mag or 41 GNR. YOU WANT TOTAL ASS KICKER THE .429 GNR IS ALL YOU NEED.

In defense of the 454, many of us that

hand load find the additional 1/10 inch of cylinder im the Mag cylinders to be very useful for seating bullets in the shorter cases that fit the same gun, ie 45/454, 44maf/44spl,ect. In my case, the Freedom Arms gun was one of the few 5 shots cylinders available, when I was purchasing. As all of old hot rodders know you don't always have to put your foot to the floor just because you drive a 572 big block.

that is true but I am talking about factory 454 ammo,

especially Corbon, Buffalo Bore, the original Freedom Arms ammo and such. Hotter than the hinges of hell. Yes, you can load it down to warm 45 Long Colt loads, which will take just about anything we will hunt here in the lower 48. But my comments weren't about those loads. They were about the HOT factory loads. I have probably shot 3000 rounds of factory hot 454 ammo, maybe more, test firing our 454 custom guns, and I learned real quick that it wasn't my cup of tea.I don't mind recoil, like 475 Linebaugh, 500 Linebaugh, my 500 GNR or 510 GNR and they are more of a push than a fast slam. But the 454 factory ammo is a bird of a different color and i have had as much fun as I can stand. From now on Nate or Robert get to shoot the 454s.
