the opening day of Dove Season in Texas. I hear shooting for miles around me. It's like a symphony!

I would relish sitting with you drinking coffee

and listening to it, even more than doing some shooting myself. So I'm with you in spirit.

Last time I went dove hunting I took my Stevens 5100 16 ga. double and some purple hulled Federals. I think that model was only made from 1941-47. My desire was to relive my youth, sporting the same gun that I used in my youth. My grandfather gave me the Stevens when I turned 12. However it was stolen from our house when I was 17. I have since replaced it with a shockingly identical replacement arm.

The plan was good except for one thing. The 1-1/8 oz. 16 ga. loads on the 20 bore chassis; RECOIL. It knocked off my hat a couple times. I finally got 5 birds with about a box of shells. My head pounded as if my brain was disconnected and flopping around in my skull. I had to drive home with my hand over one eye, my good one. That was the last time I fired that shotgun. I'll never sell it though.

Absolutely agree.

Mine his a Stevens with Walnut wood. However it weighs only 6.5 lbs. Literally a 20 ga. with 16 ga. barrels. The 1-1/8 oz. (480 gr.) loads run 1200 fps with 2-3/4 dram eq. loads (equal to 75 gr. black powder). That is the same as shooting a 6.5 lb. .45/70 over and over at things flying in all directions. All the while sitting on a 5 gal. bucket. It really makes me punchy. BTW my 12 ga. dove loads are only 1 oz. and 2.5 dram in a 7.5 lb. gun. The 16 ga. is a dream to carry, and has great power, but at the price of stiff recoil.
