Got a ruger no 1 in 404 Jeffery off gunbroker and my rounds will not go all the way but my ammo is over 8 years old. It is Hornady 400 gr DGS. Could it be the ammo?
thanks for any information

I watched that one. You got a great deal

Could be a lot of things. The Ruger #1 does not...

Have the cam effect of a bolt action. Ammo has to be right for the chamber.

Is your ammo factory stuff? The varying dimensions of many of the old rounds is tremendous.

The 404 is also not the greatest design for the #1. I'd try some different ammo if it's available?

I usually start neck sizing with a FL Size Die and stop when the action closes with a slight resistance. For hunting ammo, I go .002" more for 100% positive chambering.

Feeding the #1s can call for a little extra effort, but worth it every time.

Congrats on an uncommon one...

about to order some more ammo in another brand

I've read (but not confirmed) that these rifles had issues..

With chambers and were discontinued because of that. I know a few guys had custom barrels put on theirs because of this.

I've collected #1s for 26 years, but have never had the chance to work the 404 Jeffery.

That long, heavily tapered shoulder makes smooth feeding on a bolt gun, but it's not friendly in a single shot.

Good luck on your quest. Maybe do a search and find if some handloaders have die suggestions. Hope you'll keep us informed of what you learn.

I too have read that there were problems with

The number 1s and model 77s. The 77s were quickly discontinued due to the inability to resolve chambering problems. A small amount of #1 s were released but the number was said to be small.

Ditto. Read where one African "HUNTER" arrived on location..

With his M77 404 Jeffery and factory ammo. None of the ammo would enter the chamber due to the short chamber of the Ruger Rifles.

Makes you wonder what kind of Hunter wouldn't try the ammo and shoot their rifle before a hunt.

All these issues have solutions if you're a handloader. Makes for a rare gun too.

I would contact Ruger. They back their products.

It may or may not be a Ruger problem. The guns have a reputation for this, but could be another brand of ammo works fine.

The man is using good judgement ordering different ammo to try first.

I have a TC Contender in 6.5x54 MS. PRVI Ammo will not chamber in it. Norma works like a champ.

After he determines exactly what the problem is, it can be resolved. He is on the right track or seems that way to me.

No help at Ruger the serial number is

Tied to 1981 No. 1 in 458. So they are saying someone change bbl out. I new the risk I was taking when I got it. Going to get some one check bbl out and see what I got. Taking it one step at time. Learning a lot.

That makes sense with your earlier info...

And explains the great buy. Hope you got it cheap enough for use as a base gun.

Dealer sold it as factory no 1 404
