Reeder Custom Guns - Sending some unobtainable brass to a friend

I figured I needed to recheck it. I had fitted it to MY gun and decided to bring it to minimum specs so no problems. My gun can handle rim diameters as large as 0.483" but factory brass was 0.477, so that is what I did. The Herter's has countersunk chambers enclosing all the case head, a throw back to balloon head brass and separations. I don't like them.

0.006" is not much until it won't fit.

I think it will work, from .41 Remington Starline.

Now on to revisit making them from .30-30 Win. Already turned rims. 30-30 brass is awfully thick though and wildly tapered.

when the cylinder fills the frame, Gary set me straight on the practicality of it, get schmutz in there in the heat of the moment and unable to chamber a round! Such a simple answer but life altering at the same moment, seemed like there were several gunsmiths, in my younger years just drooling on the picture, that would set the rim inside when building a new cylinder, just thought that was how they were suppose to be! LOL!

A few guys are using the 30-30 brass haven't seen much information other than, RCBS has a die set to reform? Its cutoff and blown out! Not sure what more the $400 dollars will buy you? Do you have to ream them out, not sure how thick the brass is, it does have less capacity, so lesser charge? and the base is smaller until fire formed, will that affect the internal capacity?

Many questions and little answers.

I thought I did some before but I can't find any notes. I first trimmed the rims, used a tubing cutter to cut at shoulder, my lathe to trim cases to 1.250".

They really need to be expanded to get the case taper out then sized back down to proper specs. A .401 sizer expander ball would be handy. Easier said than done. May make a tool perhaps. It all depends if the cases need inside reaming. That's a real buzz kill and would make me just stick with .41 Rem. formed cases.

It's a little whacky but it MAY be possible to use 10mm Auto Magnum Starline brass and headspace off the case mouth in the revolver cylinder. Long shot, might be worth checking. The solid case heads would be contained fully in the cylinder. It's a chambering and dimensional thing. I'll look at it.

Internal capacities do not really matter as you are tailoring the loads to YOUR cases in YOUR gun. Can't be a wrong capacity. You start low and work up, always.

how close once fired brass would get you?

factory loaded .30-30 cartridges would very close to form fully blown out brass. It could also be gently stepped to expanded .400 cal. I made a few mocked up cartridges for my bemusement.
