Always liked the look of S&W`s 2nd generation 439. The protective wings for the fully adjustable rear sight are one reason. The 8 shot single stack magazine is not earth shaking compared to todays 9mm lineup and closely follows the build of a WWII P-38 I have. One of the few 9mm handguns I`ve bought...If you want a lesson in patience try changing the rear sight blade on one of these...

If I remember right the S&W Model 39 was the first American made high capacity 9mm in this country. Before that we had Lugers, Stars, Walthers, and other foreign made 9mms. Shortly after the Model 39 came the model 59, the 14 shot 9mm. The first high capacity American made 9mm.

a really nice piece that I sadly let go. Ditto the little original 3913. I found nothing wrong with the alloy frame S&W DA. Another favorite was my 4003, a very good early .40.

them all. But, they’ve gone by the wayside. I’ll probably look for another minty one with the old style box and papers.

wings. Did not try to change the rear blade - but it looked like a pain and needed to be taken apart because the adjustment was locked up. Very nice gun just didn 't fit me well. I think a single stack S&W would be a keeper for me!
