A Viking collection of common sense.

"Let a man never stir on his road a step without his weapons of war; for unsure is the knowing when need shall arise of a spear on the way without."

"All the doorways, before one enters, should be looked around, should be spied out; it can’t be known for certain where enemies are sitting in the hall ahead."

Wise thoughts, from a well thought out position

It's well hidden from road view about 100 yds., away in a rural neighborhood. There are some rough looking characters that live to the N.E. as the crow flies. There is a span of thick woods about 300 yds. and a deep creek, followed by a steep uphill to our house's back deck. They may be fine folks, but my spidey senses tingle a bit as a point of vulnerability. Maybe I should go visit and introduce myself as their neighbor. But then again, I've seen the "I lost my dog" trick when an intruder is discovered and confronted. Don't want anyone to be to familiar with my business either.

I have security cameras and sometimes I look at them on my phone before I go down into the area to the house. I have door latches and locks, block sticks on the inside of all doors. Usually I place small tells in front of inside doors to know if anyone has opened the door (hiding inside) etc. There is a route of checking I perform every time I enter the house before I can relax. I've mentioned the hallway and stair well that is a choke point. Not much of a good way but I know that is likely my most vulnerable spot.

If nothing else my caution is a good exercise and I try not to be complacent. If anyone ever did jump out, and they did once with a Deputy at my side!, I'll soil myself. The possibility of shooting someone too is not beyond a list potential outcomes. My horror would be a knife wielding crackhead who took the location as a refuge unknown to me!

As someone once said to you... GET A DOG!

a dog isn't scared shitless of dark corners and down long dark hallways. He also will give you a minute to get your gun out when you see him stop and the hairs on his back bristle up. A dog is real cheap life insurance.

Also find some hidey holes to stash a gun

in the haunted house where you can get to it quick, just in case.

I'd like the companion ship too. Lucy is our dog

obviously part pit bull terrier but would lick you to death. She might growl or bark, at least bluff someone at first. I plan on building a fence around the house so the dog can come stay. She'd like that too.

I keep a pistol grip pump shotgun and 9mm Makarov up there in the safe. Only issue of keeping them hid in the house is bad guys might find them too and use on me! I always eyeball the chief's block in the kitchen to make sure the Friday 13th/Halloween knife is still in it's place. Cleaver too!

I always kept a nice looking Damascus shotgun

In plain sight, on a hanger over the stove, in my place in Alaska. First thing I always looked at, when I opened the door. Plus a few greenbacks on the counter in plain sight. second thing I looked at. Any sleezebag would pick up the cash and gun, if they broke in. Never lost anything, or had a break in, but it gave me piece of mind, not being there months on end.
I always laughed that if someone loaded that old shotgun, and fired it, it would probably blow up and simplify the situation.

Old Norwegian proverb. There is no bad weather.
