brass. It was very consistent whereas commercial brass changed from lot to lot. The brass has to be cut to 1.298" and then inside reamed to take a 44 caliber bullet.
Back in the mid 1970s Lee Jurras got me into the Auto Mags and when I would get bored with all the stuff required to make the brass he would send me a box of 44 Auto Mag Super Vel brass.
I had several (11 to be exact) Auto Mags. I had several in 44 caliber, a couple of 357 Auto Mags, two 41 Auto Mags (which I consider the best Auto Mag caliber). I had one 30 AMP Auto Mag that I couldn't get to function so I sent it back to Jurras.
If you get tired of your Auto Mag I will trade you out of it.

No fiddling, just load and shoot. That’s what I used. I loaded 180-310 gr. bullets experimenting (with great forethought) not abusing the fine gun. You can crack the frame doing things you shouldn’t. I shot some 240 gr. SWC gas check and 310 Lee FNGC which both fed and were exceptionally accurate! Mainly as a test. The gun is designed for “jacketed” bullets and I’d recommend 3/4 jacketed bullets at that, to keep the workings clean. If you take it apart take care not to lose that little “bolt accelerator” part. It’s a useable part of handgunning history, a machine. Experience it and enjoy! Laser beam accuracy.

There were several companies that made Auto Mag ammo

including CDM which was a company in Mexico that made really bad ammo. Badly under-loaded that wouldn't function the guns. The good ammo was Super Vel which was great ammo but when Lee sold the company they quit making the Auto Mag ammo. Corbon was another maker which was some of the best I ever shot. It was a 240 grain load and I used a ton of it.
Other than my first Bison most of my game hunted was in the deer and exotic game size critters. I hunted in Africa several times with it and took a few
medium size animals with it, like Wart Hog, Impala,Steinbuck and so on. Most of my hunting was done here in the states during that time period and I used my Auto Mags every chance I got here in the states and in Africa.
