There are .44 guys, and .45 guys…
I’m blessed to have both. But my roots harken to the .44 Magnum. It was the baddest domestic thing around in 1978. What is YOUR favorite .44 Mag, that you own?
I wanted a SBH for my collection and I got this early 80’s example that had been modified by SSK. It had an action job, Mag-na-porting, red ramp fight, and nickel accented parts. But it shot like total crap! 6” groups at 35 yds. Through Mr. Taffin’s instructing I purchased a set of Pin Gauges. To my surprise it had a “tight spot” in the bore right behind the porting! Using black magic and fire lapping techniques it suddenly became a tight grouping gun. The tight spot is not totally ironed out but its influence is gone! So I wouldn’t grow bored I fitted a second stainless cylinder chambered in .44-40, adorned by GNR. I also took liberty to swap the dragoon grip for the stainless BH. The satin nickel was flaking and yellowing. The grips were by Bearpaw, which had been recommended.
It’s a good photo too. I was worried the fire lapping would enlarge my cylinder throats. If any, it’s very minimal and not noteworthy. Doug an I have a big stash of behemoth 330 gr. SSK TCPB bullets. I figure they will shoot through about anything!
