There are .44 guys, and .45 guys…

I’m blessed to have both. But my roots harken to the .44 Magnum. It was the baddest domestic thing around in 1978. What is YOUR favorite .44 Mag, that you own?

I wanted a SBH for my collection and I got this early 80’s example that had been modified by SSK. It had an action job, Mag-na-porting, red ramp fight, and nickel accented parts. But it shot like total crap! 6” groups at 35 yds. Through Mr. Taffin’s instructing I purchased a set of Pin Gauges. To my surprise it had a “tight spot” in the bore right behind the porting! Using black magic and fire lapping techniques it suddenly became a tight grouping gun. The tight spot is not totally ironed out but its influence is gone! So I wouldn’t grow bored I fitted a second stainless cylinder chambered in .44-40, adorned by GNR. I also took liberty to swap the dragoon grip for the stainless BH. The satin nickel was flaking and yellowing. The grips were by Bearpaw, which had been recommended.

It’s a good photo too. I was worried the fire lapping would enlarge my cylinder throats. If any, it’s very minimal and not noteworthy. Doug an I have a big stash of behemoth 330 gr. SSK TCPB bullets. I figure they will shoot through about anything!

I really like both

Roman has been thinking of a revolver of late. He comes up with the perfect opposite of anything I’d choose. He’s looking at Colt Anaconda’s! Good grief! I had the first .45 Colt Anaconda in AR back in the 1990’s. Right out of the box new, the timing was bad. I sent it back and got it fixed. But as B.B. said “the thrill has gone away!”. I dumped it. I see now days a first gen .45 cal. asking price is around $4k. I’m still not interested.

But if that’s what the boy really wants…. He sure don’t listen to me.

Thanks

I've always had a 44 mag since 1975 or76 out of the dozen or so I've owned i think that the one i have now is my favorite it'sa 4 4/8 stainless super blackhawk that came from the factory as a fluted cly and a standard blackhawk grip frame that was originally a 5 1/2"barrel.someone had sent it to magaport for their preadator package .barrel cut to 4 5/8 maganported ,action job ,jeweled hammer and trigger, inverted crown. other than a 10" sbh i had years ago the most accurate 44 I've owned[image][image][image]

44 Magnums.

One is my late father's S&W 5 screw M29 with the pinned 6.5 inch barrel. I had Gary redo it as it had 50 plus years of wear and tear on it. He said it was a very early S frame model. I really cherish that gun.

The other is a S&W Performance Hunter with the brake and integral rib on the barrel. I have yet to take anything with it but I have carried it for a variety of hunts.

The last one is just a 10" barrel in 44 Magnum for the TC Contender. I have used it on feral pigs and this past year carried it during the Maine firearms season as my main gun.

I now live in a suppressor friendly state so I have a thought of getting the 10" barrel threaded for a suppressor. I know it may sound odd but I currently have a Sig CDX 22 suppressor for my 22's . It is a ton of fun to shoot and hunt small game with a suppressed 22.

Only have 1 44 mag right now. May be a Charter
