I usually find them in Hex style and cut to suit and make washers etc. A nut of that size helps keep the threads straight after trimming to length.
Some of my old Indian tricks would be humorous to watch. I stick screws through cardboard then fold it over to insulate my fingers to grind it carefully. Got to be a better way but I got to be me. Grinding down washers is a real trick and I've lost some finger prints over time! I try to slide it on an axle and control the spin some to grind evenly. It's a challenge some times. There are some hardware store brass and aluminum washers that are real close in size to work. Things are more exciting now I have bifocals and need tri-focals. For humor only, don't do what I do.
