John is right. I wouldn't worry about washing them.

Bullets like hollow base wadcutters and other JHPs will hold drops of water for days and you will get a nasty explosion when the hot lead reaches that water. Just melt the lead as normal. All the dirt and debris will float to the top and you can skim it off as you melt the lead. Put a marble size piece of candle wax in the pot after it has fully melted. It will smoke like crazy so strike a match and stick it to the lead. it will flare up and burn. Stir it while it is burning, usually 30 seconds or so. During that time all the debris and dirt will float to the top and you can skim it off and throw it away. your lead will be mixed up, clean and ready to cast.
