before some new caster thinks he can add wet lead to molten alloy. DO NOT do it you will get an explosion with lead going all over you and everything else, and it only takes one very small drop.

Gary you are correct in that all the dirt will float to the top to be skimmed off. My bank has a lot of caliche in it and it really adheres to the bullet, but being a calcium carbonate it will not go into the mix, but I do like to get the big chunks off and keep it out of my pot.

As far as the tinsel fairy visiting, if even dripping wet lead was added to a cold pot any water will be evaporated way before the lead melts. But if it still bothers you keep the water away from the pot, that would be the best thing.
