Many Winchester cartridges use it as a basic case. The .348 Winchester did also many decades later. The .50 AK is the .348 Win. more or less straightened out. It was as big and as long as the 1886 rifle could manage. The .50 Bowen, .510 GNR, .500 Linebaugh, .500 Max. are all shorter versions adapted to humongous handgun platforms. In each case they try to maximize efficiency and useful capacity to that specific platform.
Gary’s .510 GNR is a little shorter than a .500 Linebaugh so it can be loaded down easier with a lighter bullet, but still enough capacity to load back up to Linebaugh levels with a more realistic bullet weight. His design was for a much more broad range of use. The Bowen short 50 focuses on a lighter level for smaller guns.
The study of drivers of design is interesting in itself.
