He was a bigger is better guy in rifles and hand guns.(.44 special, .44 Magnum) He thought the .458 win was an Ideal elk caliber.
What are the 38-40 useless for? They go bang, they are fun and they will hurt things well if you so desire. At one time EK thought the forty cal would be the ideal peace officers side arm.
There is a handgun hunter on another forum that deer hunts with a 38-40
I do wonder if he was still with us if he would like all the new huge bores out there now. He was mighty content with the .44
