Meat. Two of the largest slaughter houses have been shut down and grocery stores are throwing out meat that is beyond the "sell by" dates. Nate was telling me about the meat shortage and the milk shortage. One of the largest grocery store chains dumped 10 tons of day old meat over the weekend. One of the largest dairys in Arizona dumped a quarter million gallons of milk into the desert over the weekend because the schools are closed and it was milk for the schools and was a day over the "sell by" dates. . All this baffles me as they could have given away the meat and the milk rather than throwing it away.

Back a hundred years ago when I was a senior in high school I would help my grandmother out as she didn't have anyone around. I would drive her old 1954 Chevy truck into Nashville to the Sunbeam Bread company and the truck had sideboards on the bed of the truck that were 6 feet high. The Sunbeam Bread company sold day old bread for $5 a pick up truck load, and with her tall sideboards a pick up load was a lot of bread. It wasn't just bread but anything Sunbeam made, like donuts, apple pies and such. My grandmother would pick out her part of what she could use or put in the freezer and give her neighbors a large batch of bread and such. The dogs ate well too. And before I pulled out of the large Sunbeam parking lot I would go into the back of the truck and pick out the boxes of donuts and such and enjoy them on the way back to Grannys house, which was about a 45 minute drive (no interstate back then). The gist of this is nothing was wasted. There was absolutely nothing wrong with day old bread (or donuts).

Back to our situation here, the grocery stores could have given the meat and milk away rather than dumping it. Even if they listed it as "for animal use only", at least that would have been better that throwing it away. Hell, old people in Florida are buying the all meat dog food and making a meatloaf out of it. They can't afford the $5 a lb ground beef and the dog food was 1/3rd of the cost. There is just way too much politically correct bullshit these days. And people are "too good" to eat day old bread and hamburger. If this meat and milk shortage continues they might wish they had some of that day old meat and milk and the local cat population might look pretty good too.
