I don't know about firearm brass but in the water

business historically we have used tons and tons of brass fittings. They reticently outlawed it. We had a short time to install existing stores then a drop dead date on any lead containing brass fixtures.

The mix for manufacturing brass in the water industry is basically 60% copper, 35% zinc and 5% lead. They dropped the lead and substituted bismuth or a combination of bismuth and tin. It is a workable substitution but did adversely effect the cost, machining ability, and malleability. Our fittings basically went up 20% which will ultimately be passed on to consumers through increased rates. Although it may take several years.

Obama basically shut down the last lead smelter in the US and with these changes in the brass industry, in general, it would not surprise me if the ammo manufacturers were hit also. Perhaps someone can bend the ear of a technician who might actually know something. I bet it's not a widely know regulation or change.
