A question a/b AR15 uppers?

So I bought my first-ever AR15 this year, an ATI, right before the CV19 panic hit. This is my first ever AR. If I wanted to get another caliber (say hypothetically a 6x45), is all I need an upper? And I just assemble the new caliber/upper and off to the range? I already have the magazines so that's not a problem. Are there any uppers to steer clear from? Thanks,
