It's the most important part of your equipment. Search for closeouts, flashy graphics cost. I like stand out colors, white is good too. IF you have a round head the Shoei might fit you better, an oval head like me and Amede the Arai is heaven. Riding down the road June bugs just bounce off and they are quiet. With those half helmet heroes, catch one in the cheek sometime!
It's like scopes on guns. You pay for quality and it pays returns. Arai are literally hand made one at a time. I bought a "Bell" helmet lately and cheaper lids will do well too but are not in the same quality range. It's fine for a round head and off road competition that I do in observed trials, it was $100.
You can get a cheaper one to begin but I'd suggest a full coverage model with good venting. They take a while to break in on your head. Gloves are a good idea too. I once spent a week very carefully wiping my butt with bandages on both hands due to sliding down asphalt at 40 mph.
BTW right now I have (5) street licensed motorcycles; Triumph 800 & 900 Speedmasters, BMW R75/5 Toaster, Ducati S4RS Tricolore, and a Suzuki DR350R. One for every mood! When I get depressed I usually go buy a gun or motorcycle. It works for me. No jail record and I'm still married to my high school sweetheart. Going for a ride or shooting a gun is very therapeutic.

I'd figure to budget $400-600 realistically.
