But I did not just remove the bayonet. I took off the top wood and cut the forend of the stock off, also. I know that changes things.
In the end I may cut the barrel back to 17" and remove that barrel band that holds the front sight. That would get rid of the offending part. I haven't cut it off yet due to the problem of mounting a new front sight high enough to work.
I am trying something else and we will see.
