Have been. As is either the .41 is too close to the .44 (.43 Magnum) or the .44 is too close to the .41. The .400 is better centered between the .357 and .44 in my view. Take your pick of jacketed .41 bullets, lube lightly, and in a real reloading press (not a rotary cartridge maker) mash them through to make a fantastic .401” jacketed custom bullet. It only gets a little longer.
It’s not magic, just smooth shooting. Working up loads is also easy the same as anything, just in between. For the same bullet weights you can’t push them quite as fast at the same pressures but close enough. The bullets increase in ballistic coefficients as they grow longer in slightly smaller calibers at the same weight too. In theory an advantage in retention and penetration. Hard to convince an animal though.
Remember working up hot loads in a DA, they all eject at the same time! So case drag is x6, not just one, as in the SA. You cant fly as close to the sun, hold a little reserve.
Lastly, CCI makes (very expensive) .40 S&W shotshells. NEVER, Ever shoot them in a clip run DA. Just don’t. - brass rod and hammer time!
