Flattop Tools, I’d highly recommend you invest in one. It is one of the best investments you’ll ever make. I have a K-22 that I’ve owned for over 35 years and it has a preference for standard velocity ammo. Seems like the higher the velocity, the worse it groups.... and the “hyper velocity” ammo doesn’t group, it resembles a pattern. About the only hi velocity hollowpoint it shoots well enough that I’ll hunt with is Mini-Mags. However in this crazy world of panic buying and hoarding, Mini-Mags aren’t necessarily in abundance. I have a few thousand rounds on hand that I bought in the years B.O. (before Obama), but wanted to see what I could find that would be an effective hunting round if I didn’t have Mini-Mags. Enter Gary’s Flattop Tool.
A few weeks ago I sat down and took a box of SK Match Ammo and used Gary’s Flattop Tool along with a fairly rigid box cutter turned out a batch of flat nose match ammo. Did a quick accuracy comparison off my deck at 35 yards and was pleasantly surprised to find that not only was the accuracy unchanged, but point of impact was essentially the same......maybe a 1/4” difference. At 35 yards using a sandbag rest on my deck rail, I could shoot groups that you can cover with a dime. I think Scott and Colleen saw them. This morning here in my part of PA was a nice crisp one.... and it rained last evening. Perfect squirrel hunting conditions. I hunted along a nice hilltop of oak and walnut trees that runs next to a corn field we harvested back in November. There is still some corn on the ground although the deer have pretty much cleaned that up.... but enough to get attention from the squirrels and there are nuts available too. I set up next to a tree top that blew over last year and in about an hour and a half had my limit of squirrels. The performance of that match ammo that I ran through Gary’s Flattop Tool was outstanding.....excellent accuracy and seemed to hit with similar authority as the Mini-Mags. Close enough that I couldn’t tell a difference out of an 8 3/8” handgun barrel. Knowing how well that experiment worked out, I just sat down to a strong piping hot cup of black coffee and thought I’d share my experience with you guys. If you haven’t used Gary’s Flattop Tool, I can’t recommend it enough.....and it would make for a great Christmas gift for friends and family. Thanks for such a great and practical tool Gary.
