Exclusively Southern during the Civil War era as they were short on steel for manufacturing. Brass was around in the form of church bells and other ornamental implements that could be repurposed for gunmaking. One expert proclaimed “Colt” never made any brass frame gun. I guess he’s actually right, save for the little pocket single shots and spur trigger rim fires. (I had a brass alloy Colt #3 .41 once)
The limited run “steel” chassis revolvers used by the South are very interesting and worthy of sampling!
