handloader will hit from time to time. but that is when you keep adding more and more powder and get no more velocity. I prefer medium weight bullets for all my hunting, other than some dangerous game like African game. But for all else I like a medium weight bullet.

Steve Hornady has some special handgun ammo coming out that he is using lightweight to medium weight bullets in. These are cartridges up to 454 and bigger. In many of them like 44 mag, 45 long colt and 454 he uses 200 grain bullets traveling fast. That is pretty much how my handgun ammo is loaded, in most cases. My 41 GNR for years has been the best with the 170 grain bullet at hyper speeds. My 44 mag ammo for most game has been the 180 grain Sierra or the 220 grain JHP bullet. My 429 GNR in my personal revolver works best with a 200 to 240 grain bullet. My 510 GNR is another where I use moderate weight bullets. My gun for the African lion a few weeks ago was loaded with 350 grain bullets and in that caliber that is a light to medium weight bullet.

But it is all up to the person loading the ammo to find a spot where he gains nothing more other than a large muzzle blast or where he reaches optimum accuracy. Some folks love the heavy for caliber bullets. Some like heavy bullets at moderate speeds. It is all in what you are comfortable with and what your gun shoots the best with..
