in the destruction of meat. Certainly it would cut a Coyote in half. If it was a soft .45 colt projectile it might not get to the target or blow up on the surface muscle tissue and not penetrate.
I know everyone knows there must be a balance.
In REVOLVERS there seems to be a performance balance of efficiency. Too light a bullet and it does not provide enough resistance to burn much of the powder. (4-5/8" w/very light bullet is a graphic example - with noted exceptions) Compared to a .44 wheelgun with a 325 gr. bullet in a 10-1/2", the other end of the spectrum. There is a reason the 240 gr. bullet is so popular. But it's a designed compromise. The handloader can exploit things to his special circumstances. You just have to analyze and find that direction.
In single shots they behave like rifles anyway. Another kettle of fish. The 7mm GNR with a 120 gr. bullet is literally a 7X57 pocket rifle. While the barrels are short compared to rifles one can simply manipulate the powder and bullet weight, to a smaller extent, and gain proportional performance.
It's apples and oranges. The fun is the technical manipulation to maximize performance to YOUR satisfaction, beyond anything you can obtain over the counter.
