about the snakes in South America. The place is supposed to be crawling with them and movies like "Anaconda" keep the public in the belief that such is the case. There ARE a few spots, of course, including one island off the coast of southern Brazil that has an amazing number of venomous snakes on it, but the Amazon Basin itself, where I grew up, didn't seem to have all that many. Most we came across were boa constrictors or anacondas of fairly small size (compared to potential growth) that were displaced by jungle destruction and road building.
On one trip down Elk River one early summer day back in the mid-80's we saw more snakes than I'd seen in my entire life in S. America. The Ozarks are definitely snaky country. Drifting down a creek or river at night could definitely be an unnerving experience!
Was it Elmer Keith that wrote about someone fencing in a bit of property and turning hogs into it to clear out the rattlers? It seems to me he related something like that in "Hell, I Was There!".
